Could someone please post a simple program for communicating with a shift register? I have some LEDs hooked to it and I want a program that can turn on the LEDs in anyway that I want to. Please make it as simple as possible.

What shift register?

Well in some parts of the code I see what is going on but I need a detailed explanation on what is going on in the code in some other parts. My shift register is the
SN74HC164NE4.
